The inset days are suitable for: GCSE , A & AS Level, BTEC , GNVQ & Perf. Arts.& Multimedia course leaders and technicians.  Museum technicians and anyone who is connected with presentation.

Course Title: “Hands on” stage Lighting design Workshop

Key stages 3,4,and post 16  

Target group

Teachers who want to extend their basic  knowledge of stage lighting for use in back in the classroom. Also relevant for technicians and anyone involved with the performing arts. 

Description of the course

Knowledge and understanding 

Extend technical knowledge of stage lighting and lighting design.
Explore the use of different types of stage lanterns.
Operate lighting control desks
Latest developments in theatre lighting relevant to school use. 

Participants will learn How to

Get the best from their school lighting system
Plug up dimmers and the use the control desks.
Choose the right equipment for their school system or production. 

Personal Qualities Developed by the course are

Greater confidence in using lighting in their teaching
A clear understanding of health and safety issues
Better knowledge of special effects for use in schools productions

Course content and methodology

Practical “hand on” workshop
Demonstration of different lighting effects through the use of a large model theatre, which is constructed on the day as part of the workshop.  
Question and answer sessions
Surgery sessions on participants own set up and forthcoming production issues.

Intended impact on practice

Improved teaching of the technical elements of exam courses
Extending the KS3 curriculum to included technical units

Course pre-requisites

This course is aimed at teachers with limited knowledge of stage lighting or those who want to refresh forgotten skills

Participants should bring

Bring any questions about their own school lighting system
Come dressed for the practical work as part of the day is constructing the model theatre complete with flats, backdrops and gauzes
