Exciting west end style
sets for the spring - summer tour
Right: the finale based on the Phantom of the Opera this
set mysteriously appears through the starry sky . The lighting in
the scene is built up in stages and operated by the students.
A recent comment from the Head of Drama
St Michael's School, Chorley, Lancs:
"In my 23 years of teaching Drama I've yet to find a more
interesting and creative way of
introducing GCSE pupils to Stage lighting."
With the model
theatre it is possible to show far more real stage settings and
lighting techniques in the allotted time. I bring the exciting live theatre
environment into the classroom!
Students were
"gob smacked " Ann Percival head of drama Thirsk school North
Yorkshire.
You don't see light, ........you only
see what light hits!
The famous Giant
model theatre
With the aid of an enormous model
theatre (7’ tall by 8’deep by 8’ wide) built up by the students in
the first 25minutes. The students can learn about the many varied
technical facilities that make up a working stage.
It has several "Flown" sets,
gauzes,
back drops, cyclorama and other scenery and lighting bars. In front of
the model theatre a lighting bar is set up on stands. Students then
using real stage lights, explore the use of :digital dimmers, patching,
manual and memory control desks, Floods, Fresnels, Profiles spots, parcans,
birdies, scrollers, etc.
The workshops will
demonstrate lighting for Proscenium Arch, thrust, and theatre in the
round stage productions.
How does a gauze curtain work?
I will show you live ! Macbeth witches appear through a dark forest gauze
and then the cauldron starts to steam!
How to chose, which light to use where.
How to bring out the emotional and visual content of the play, using
colour, lighting angles, and cross fades. Photo below: one
of the model theatre scenes showing the use of controlled foreground lighting,
and the use of perspective to make the stage appear deeper than it really
is. This scene was "flown in" using the fly bars on the model
theatre.

"Thank
you so much for the brilliant workshop. The students were quite inspired by
your presentation, many
describing it as "well-good". When the next academic year
calendar
is out I will be contacting you again with a view to booking for next
year."
Thanks
again Jon Sowden Tiverton

 | Complementary hand book for teachers.
(which can be photocopied) |
 | The workshop will be related to your school performing space and system |
 | I can also relate
it to a forthcoming school production. |
 | Students will work as a team
and carry out quick scene changes in seconds and in a blackout! |
 | This
introduces briefly the discipline of stage management. |

 | With the model
theatre it is possible to show far more real stage settings and
lighting techniques in the allotted time. |
 | Focusing
techniques, the use of shutters and barn doors, irises and gauze
effects. The use of gobos, to create city sky lines, forests or
church windows etc. Gobos can really transform your performing space! |
 | Towards the end of the workshops the visual interest
increases yet more with the introduction of simple yet very effective
fire and water projections. and famous "west end" sets |
 | The workshop is backed up with projections
of productions I have lit
in this country and abroad, and many of the animated diagrams form the
basis for the teachers hand book
(which can be photocopied )and the students will be able
to tell me how we have lit a scene, with which type of light and with what
type of accessories. |
The workshops are suitable for GCSE , A level, BTEC , GNVQ & Perf.
Arts.& M ultimedia, students.
Duration:
1st workshop of the day 3 hours, 2nd workshop on the same day 2hours, also
half day or day workshops can be arranged, other

Production advice
and guided help for students with designing, rigging plotting, and
operating has also become extremely useful for many schools.

county. (see News and events)
Here are just a few comments from some
teachers and students
Thank you so much for your excellent workshop,
Everyone staff and students had a thoroughly good time that was instructive,
structured and interactive, and how professionally the whole course was run. We
will have no hesitation in recommending you to others and hope that you may
visit us again in the future. Guy Williams, head of drama, Hazelwick
school, Crawley June 2006
"Useful & well structured from the
simple basics to more complex uses of lights. (The mini theatre was
brilliant) will allow me to apply some of the ideas."
C Todd, Head of Drama, Royds Hall High
school, Huddersfield.
The students were just "Gob
Smacked " as later lessons have shown just how much they had
gained. They now can't wait to visit the theatre to put their new
found knowledge into practice so much so I think they'll only notice
the lighting effects! I'll certainly recommend you at the next
Moderation Meeting.
Ann Percival Head of Drama Thirsk School North
Yorkshire.
